KLM GNA will be conducting a Grouse Camp with a gathering point at Summit Lake Game Farm located in Stone Lake, Wisconsin. This is an informal gathering in the north woods of Wisconsin. Summit Lake Game Farm is in some of the most productive grouse woods in the Midwest, with the grouse camp timed to provide opportunities for Woodcock, excellent for younger dogs, as well as limited waterfowl. Summit Lake is a pheasant preserve offering KLM GNA members an opportunity to setup preserve hunts as well as offering Sporting Clays and Skeet for warmup(s). If you are interested in arranging a pheasant hunt, please contact Summit Lake to reserve your field.
We have secured one of their three rental cabins, the Bunk House which offers 3 bedrooms and can sleep 8. This will be on a first come opportunity for anyone who which to secure one of the rooms. For one of the rooms please contact:

The hunting will be on public lands, with some pre-mapped areas to assist the different groups. If you are new to the grouse woods, we’ll work to pair members up with more experienced members. This is Grouse Camp, so nightly social hour(s) will be conducted at Bunkhouse Cabin with a bonfire, weather permitting. Hunting License information
To purchase a small game license, please use the following link to Wisconsin’s DNR non-resident License.
https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/GoWild/nonresident.html
If this is the first time you’re going to hunt in Wisconsin, I would encourage you to look at the Nonresident First-time Buyer option. To hunt woodcock, you must select the HIP certificate (at no cost) when purchasing your small game license. When hunting woodcock your firearm must be plugged to limit its total capacity to no more than 3 shells.
If you chose to try to get in a waterfowl hunt too, please ensure you purchase the Wisconsin Waterfowl Stamp too along with your Federal Waterfowl Stamp. All waterfowl hunting requires non-tox shot, while grouse and woodcock do not.
If you chose to hunt only at Summit Lake Game Farm for one of their field hunts, you are not required to purchase a Wisconsin Hunting License.
Please note: This event has been CANCELLED due to poor hunting conditions. See President’s note on our News & Events page.
KlM-GNA will be conducting a Prairie Camp with a gathering point at Ramkota Hotel located in Pierre, South Dakota. This is an informal gathering in some of the most productive grasslands in North America. South Dakota is #1 in the country for the harvest of wild pheasants. There is also a decent population of sharp-tails and prairie chickens in the area. There are thousands of acres of public hunting, including the Fort Pierre National Grasslands and many other walk-in areas, game production areas, and school and public lands. We also have access to private property on a fee basis on November 5th & 6th, reservations will be required.
We will plan to meet the evening of November 4th at the Ramkota Hotel, the event headquarters, for informal get together, a social hour and dinner from the menu. This would afford us the opportunity to discuss topics about the club and the dogs in a very informal setting. There are several good places to eat in or near Pierre, so we will leave November 6th open so groups can form and organize as they choose. Please feel free to arrive sooner or stay longer for more opportunities to hunt all other expenses will be the responsibility of the member.
Right now, we are just suggesting you do a couple of things:
-
-
- First, make your reservation at the Ramkota or any other hotel you choose. We have a block of 15 rooms reserved under the title, “KlM-GNA Hunting Dog Club” for $96 per night plus tax at the Ramkota until August 1. Let them know you are with the Club to get the best rate. The hotel reservation number is: 605-224-6877. Cancellations can be made prior to 4 PM one day before checking in without charge, so if the event has to be cancelled there is no loss to you. I recommend making your reservation as soon as possible.
- Let me know just by dropping me a quick email or text if you think you will be coming, if you might be interested in hunting the private property, if you have any ideas, or would like to help in any way. Official registration forms will follow later in the summer.

Hunting License information:
The State of Michigan has 3-day and 7-day non-resident small game hunting licenses that may
be purchased online (search State of Michigan DNR), in addition to a full season nonresident
license. If you were born after 1960, you will need a copy of your hunter’s safety certificate or a
hunting license to purchase a Michigan Small Game License.
There are limited opportunities to waterfowl hunt in the area, so you may want to purchase a
State of Michigan Waterfowl endorsement in addition to your small game license and a Federal
Duck Stamp.
Expected game:
Ruffed grouse, woodcock, cottontail, and ducks. If you intend to hunt woodcock, please make sure you sign up for the HIP when obtaining your small game license and your shotgun is limited to no more than three shots (plugged or a double).
Recommended to bring:
- Recommendation for ammunition – #6, # 7 1⁄2 or #8 lead shot for grouse, woodcock,
cottontail and nontoxic shot for ducks. - A good pair of hunting boots are highly recommended – plan on walking 2-5 miles daily
- Hunter Orange
- Eye wash for the dog’s eye
- A second good pair of hunting boots is highly recommended if conditions get wet.
- Clothing to accommodate the weather conditions.
- Camp Chair
- Cooler
- GPS collars are recommended for your dogs
Agenda:
Meet up at a designated location (tbd) Thursday morning October 12th. We’ll have some locations pin dropped for individuals to explore – there are thousands of acres of land open to
hunting so we’ll try to find as many new areas as we can.
We’ll break up into smaller groups and head out to hunt with a selected location to meet up for
midday lunch along one of the roads/ two tracks (peanut & butter sandwiches are grandfather
in for lunch this time). Plan on bringing a camp chair and lunch items…you’re in the UP so
cheese, smoked meats and all other manner of things your doctor probably does not want you
to eat works well. We’ll reset after the noon daybreak, then head back out for the afternoon.
The goal is to get an opportunity to hunt with and meet as many of your fellow KlM members as
we can.
At the end of the day, we’ll try to rendezvous again and tell stories…The cabin will act as a place
where we can hold community dinners, sit around the fire (weather permitting) and stage out of.
Repeat Friday & Saturday…please remember this is the UP…it’s beautiful, slow down and enjoy!
The fall colors should be in.

Iowa Pheasant Hunt: October 27th – 30th
KlM-GNA will be conducting an Iowa Pheasant Hunt in the Spirit Lake / Lake Okoboji area of Iowa. The hunt will be in group(s) on public land. These areas are very large (several hundred to several thousand acres) accommodating larger groups. There will also be opportunities if you wish to break off and explore on your own. Several of my friends who are devout Pheasant hunters and new KlM members will be joining us with pre-scouted targeted areas. The hunting conditions are primarily large high density native (Buffalo) grass fields and cat tail depressions.
Recommended to bring:
- Non tox shells #4 steel / #4 or 5 Bismuth /#6 Tungsten (these are wild birds – they do not go down easily)
- A good pair of hunting boots are highly recommended – plan on walking 4-6 miles daily
- Hunter Orange
- Eye wash for the dog’s eyes
- Ointment for the dog’s nose – the grasses will cause chapping
- Dog skid plate jackets
- A second good pair of hunting boots is highly recommended if conditions get wet.
- Clothing to accommodate the weather conditions.
- Camp Chair
- Cooler
Agenda:
We plan on getting in on Friday October 27th maybe go out as a group for dinner. We’ll coordinate opening day, Saturday October 28th – the group will leave for the public land fields early ~ 4:00 am. Hunting begins at 8:00 and finishes at 4:30. Bringing coffee and your breakfast out to our hunting location is recommended. If the weather permits, we’ll stop for lunch in the field, which is a coordinated potluck of lunch meats, condiments, water & pop and chips. The same “grandfathered” clause for peanut & butter sandwiches for lunch this time is valid in Iowa too.
Right now, we are just suggesting you do a couple of things:
- Hunting License information – if you were born after January 1, 1972, then you will be required to produce a copy of your Hunter’s Education Certificate. A copy of your state’s hunting license will not be accepted – Iowa requires a Hunter’s Education Certificate. If it is required and you cannot find it, please contact your state for a copy sooner than later. It takes Iowa about a week to get you into their system if you opt to purchase online after receiving a copy of your Hunting Education Certificate.
Go online and purchase your Hunter’s License – please see link below:
https://www.iowadnr.gov/Portals/idnr/uploads/Hunting/huntingregs.pdf
If you are a non-resident hunter there are two options, a season Non-Resident License and Habitat for $144.00 or a 5-day Non-Resident License and Habitat for $92.00.
You may also want to consider a Migratory Game Bird Fee – we have had opportunities to jump shoot local ducks in the past. Please note, you also will need a Federal Duck Stamp too if you opt in.
Expect to be stopped by an Iowa Game Warden on opening weekend. In the past we have had great interaction with these officers, once they have checked our paperwork…they have even given us recommendations on areas where we may want to hunt.
- Make a reservation for your own lodging. Below are just some accommodations in the area. There are others too, this is a summer vacation area because of the lakes, so feel free to explore other locations.
